You don’t expect to find waterproof shorts that you like for their looks as much as you appreciate their functionality, but Maloja may have changed that. The Stulanza is a slim cut, which has more of the look of a board short with its wide waistband and curved white stripe trim. But made from lightweight SympaTex it doesn’t just look good – it works extremely well.

The clean styling puts this jacket straight to the top of our most-wanted list, but riding in it firmly underlined that position. It is incredibly well made with the sort of detail that makes you sigh with pleasure. The cuffs are zipped so you can close them up or wear them loose, with a curve that dips over your hand.

These are, as far as we know, unique in that they cover both the front and back wheels with one interchangeable design. Clamps go round either the seatstays or fork legs, so the guard always moves with the suspension. In practice they were fiddly to fit the first time round, and even a bind to refit later, so they didn’t win many friends on that front. They were smart and unobtrusive once in place, but weighty, and the front guard didn’t stop water and mud getting thrown forward into our faces.
